Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies. – Andy Dufresne, The Shawshank Redemption
Today was the first day of the University of Miami’s hearing before the NCAA Committee on Infractions. The hearing is expected to last three days. Today’s hearing was procedural in nature, dealing with Miami’s Motion to Immediately Conclude the Case. Alleged violations concerning the Canes football team will take place on Friday. Alleged basketball violations will be discussed on Saturday. Following the COI Hearing, the University of Miami will likely have to wait at least 6 long weeks before learning its fate. The press and media were excluded from the hearing. So, what do we know TODAY?
- University President Donna Shalala and ACC Commissioner John Swofford were in attendance. As were UM Athletic Director Blake James, Coach Al Golden, and Coach Jim Larranga. Former assistant coaches, Frank Haith and Clint Hurtt were also there.
- NCAA President Mark Emmert was noticeably absent from this proceeding.
- At the conclusion of Today’s hearing, President Shalala sported a grin from ear to ear. She also threw up the U.
- Al Golden did not wear an orange tie.
Wait a minute…go back.
Al Golden did not wear an orange tie?
No, before that.
While leaving the hearing, President Shalala smiled and threw up the U?!?
Yup – that’s where we’ll focus. I don’t know about you, but I have never walked out of a meeting/hearing/conference/trial/etc. and thrown up the U. I don’t think I have ever had a meeting/hearing/conference/trial/etc. go well enough that I felt compelled to throw up the U. Which leads to the question that is sure to be pondered over the interwebz for the foreseeable future – what caused Donna to throw up the U? Perhaps we’ll never know– but I assure you, it can’t be a bad thing.
